I attended a conference yesterday discussing the needs and support available for individuals living with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (formally known as Borderline Personality Disorder as it was thought to sit somewhere between psychosis and unstable personalities with a move now to call it EUPD – Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder and now CPTSD). Our “inner child” is a reference that is heard more and more outside of counselling. One dictionary definition describes it as “a person’s supposed original or true self, especially when regarded as concealed in adulthood”. Our inner child often comes out unconsciously and consciously in our thinking, behaviour and actions, both positive and less so, and when acknowledged can provide vital communications of unresolved or poorly negotiated development phases.
